Baseball earns first sweep at Gardner-Webb with 7-1 win

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - Sophomore Carson Andrew threw a six inning gem while the Dolphins scored a run in each of the first five innings to lead the JU baseball team to a 7-1 win over Gardner-Webb and tally its first sweep in Boiling Springs, N.C., Saturday afternoon in game two of a doubleheader at Varsity Field.
JU (6-0, 3-0), which earned its first sweep at Varsity Field since joining the A-Sun in 1998, scored seven runs on eight hits to win its sixth consecutive game.
GWU (3-5, 0-3) finished with eight hits in the contest but left 11 runners on base and committed a game-high three errors.
"This is a big weekend for our program to accomplish what we did," said JU head coach Terry Alexander. "I could not have scripted a better a start for such a new squad but we are doing a good job of clicking together. Hopefully we can continue this momentum as we face some more tough opponents this week."
Carson (2-0) earned the win after scattering three hits with a walk and five strikeouts in six scoreless innings of work. Junior Garrett Dunlap notched his first save of the year after closing out the final three innings.
Ben Campbell (0-2) was tagged with the loss after allowing seven runs (six earned) on eight hits with two walks and five strikeouts in 4.1 innings.
Ty Boyles and Josh Drewery each finished with multiple hits to lead the Bulldogs.
JU took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, to run its first inning scoring streak to six games, after an RBI single by Gillan. Ferreira led off the game with a walk and then advanced to second on a sacrifice by junior left fielder Kyle Fleming. With two outs, Gillan pulled a ball through the left side to give JU the lead.
The Dolphins increased the lead to 3-0 in the top of the second when Ferreira drove in a run with a ground out and Fleming hit an RBI single with two outs. Lopez led off the inning with a single through the left side and then advanced to second when junior designated hitter Dan Maier was hit by a pitch. Bernazard loaded the bases when he reached on fielder's choice sacrifice and Ferreira followed with a fielder's choice to second to score Lopez. After Maier was caught at home on a double-steal attempt, Fleming pulled a pitch through the right side to score Ferreira.
JU increased the lead to 4-0 in the top of the third when Lopez hit an RBI double with two outs. With two outs, Opachich hit a single to right, stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error by Ty Boyles on the steal attempt. Lopez followed with a drive down the third-base line to plate Opachich.
The Dolphins made it 5-0 in the top of the fourth when Fleming hit a sacrifice fly to center. Bernazard led off the inning with a walk and then stole consecutive bases before Fleming hit a high fly to center to drive him in.
JU increased the lead to 7-0 in the top of the fifth when Opachich drove in a run with a grounder and Lopez hit an RBI double. Gillan led off the inning with a double to left and then stole third base. With one out and the infield drawn in, Opachich reached base on a fielding error by Josh Drewery at short to drive in Gillan. After Opachich reached third on a failed pick attempt at first, Lopez followed with a drive down the left-field line.
Andrew got out of a jam in the bottom of the fifth with runners on second and third with two out but got Daniel Cooke to pop out to Lopez at short to end the inning.
GWU got on the board with a run in the bottom of the seventh after an RBI double to left by Jamaal Kinard.
JU will begin a home-and-home series against UCF beginning on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. in Orlando, Fla.
