Matt Lopez named A-Sun "Player of the Week"

March 3, 2008

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Senior shortstop Matt Lopez was named Atlantic Sun Conference "Player of the Week" after leading the Dolphins to a sweep over Gardner-Webb, the program's first at Varsity Field since the Bulldogs joined the conference in 2002.

An all-freshman selection in 2005, Lopez suffered through nagging injuries last season but enters 2008 in full health and continued his torrid hitting in Boiling Springs, N.C.

"Matt has always been known for his glove but he has always been above .320 as a hitter when he is healthy," said JU head coach Terry Alexander. "You can see he is back to his old self by the way he has started this season and I expect him to conclude his final year in a Dolphin uniform on a good note. Matt is starting in his fourth year at shortstop for us and has been a big piece to the success we have enjoyed the past two seasons."

In a weekend in which JU stayed undefeated and jumped out to a 3-0 conference mark for the first time since 1991 (6-0), Lopez batted .467 (7-15) with four doubles, a home run, five RBI, 14 total bases, a .933 slugging percentage and a .467 on-base percentage.

In game one, he finished 3-for-5 with two doubles, a home run and two RBI, but this biggest hit was a two-run round tripper to break a 6-6 tie in the eighth and lead the Dolphins to a 9-6 win.

In game two, Lopez only batted 1-for-6 with an RBI but the hit was his second game winner in as many days when his lone hit drove in a run in the top of the 12th, which led JU to a 6-5 win.

In the finale, he did his part at the plate once again by going 3-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI en route to a 7-1 Dolphin win to complete the sweep.

The Dolphins will continue the non-conference portions of their schedule with a home-and-home series against UCF, beginning on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. in Orlando, Fla.
