JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Junior Tim Brown was effective on the mound while the Dolphins pounded out 11 runs on 13 hits to lead the JU baseball team to an 11-4 win over Belmont, Saturday afternoon in game one of a doubleheader at John Sessions Stadium.

JU (8-1, 4-0) stayed unbeaten in Atlantic Sun Conference play by scoring a combined 10 runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings.

Belmont (4-5, 1-3) suffered its third straight loss in conference action after dropping its final two games to Lipscomb last weekend.

"This is a good start for the weekend," said JU head coach Terry Alexander. "I'd like to see us cut down on the errors but a win is a win. We need to keep the pressure on offensively because I expect Belmont to bounce back in game two."

Brown (2-0) earned the win after allowing four runs (two earned) on seven hits with no walks and two strikeouts in 6.2 innings of work. Freshman Matt Tomshaw closed out the game with 2.1 innings of scoreless relief.

Carlo Testa (1-1) was tagged with the loss after allowing seven runs on nine hits with four walks and five strikeouts in 4.1 innings.

JU, which has scored in the first inning of all nine games this season, took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when junior catcher Jeremy Gillan recorded a sacrifice fly. Ferreira led off the inning with a double to center and then advanced to third on a fly out to left by Fleming. After junior right fielder Thomas Meyers drew a walk, Gillan hit the first pitch to deep center to score Ferreira.

Belmont evened the contest, 1-1, in the top of the third when Testa hit an RBI single up the middle with a runner on second base and two outs.

The Dolphins retook the lead, 3-1, in the bottom of the fourth when sophomore third baseman Bernazard hit and RBI single and Ferreira tallied a sacrifice fly. With one out, junior designated hitter Dan Maier drew a walk and then moved to second on a single through the left side by Lopez. After sophomore second baseman Opachich drew a walk to load the bases, Bernazard laced a single to center to drive in Maier. Ferreira followed with a drive to center to drive in Lopez.

JU increased the margin to 7-1 in the bottom of fifth after racking up four runs on five hits. Gillan, sophomore first baseman Alex Martinez and Maier each hit consecutive singles to load the bases before Lopez followed with a single through the left side to score two runs. Opachich followed with a sacrifice fly to right to score Maier and then junior left fielder Kyle Fleming drew a bases loaded walk with two outs.

The Dolphins increased the margin to 11-1 in the bottom of the sixth when Gillan and Maier each hit solo home runs, Ferreira hit an RBI ground out to second and Opachich scored from second on a throwing error by shortstop Packy Elkins.
