Baseball rallies but falls to Lipscomb, 7-3
March 14, 2008
NASHVILLE, Fla. - Junior catcher Jeremy Gillan went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI, including a game-tying double in the top of the seventh, but the baseball team eventually fell to Lipscomb, 7-3, Friday evening at Ken Dugan Field.
JU (12-2, 6-1), which had its first inning scoring streak snapped at 13 and left 11 runners on base, had its six game winning streak snapped and dropped its first game in Atlantic Sun Conference play.
Lipscomb (6-7, 4-3) won for only the second time against the Dolphins after scoring four runs in the bottom of the seventh, including a big three-run homer by Allen Bolden with two outs.
"We faced a guy who was voted preseason pitcher of the year so we knew it was not going to be easy," said JU head coach Terry Alexander. "Jeremy was able to get a big hit to tie things up but Lipscomb answered with a big hit of their own. We have to regroup and come back tomorrow."
Junior Tim Brown (2-1) was tagged with the loss after allowing six runs (five earned) on six hits with a walk and three strikeouts in 6.1 innings.
Rex Brothers (2-2), who was voted A-Sun Preseason "Pitcher of the Year", earned the win after allowing three runs on nine hits with five walks and nine strikeouts in seven innings of work.
Along with Gillan, senior center fielder Kevin Ferreira finished with multiple hits for the Dolphins.
Bolden finished 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBI to lead the Bisons. The Bisons took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning when Caleb Joseph hit a solo home run to left field with one out.
LU increased the lead to 3-0 in the bottom of the sixth inning when Blake Bratcher hit an RBI single to center while another run scored on the play after a fielding error in the outfield with two outs.
JU evened the contest, 3-3, in the top of the seventh when senior shortstop Matt Lopez hit a sacrifice fly and Gillan connected on a two out, two-run double. Sophomore second baseman Chuck Opachich led off the inning with a single to center and then moved to second on a single to third by Ferreira. After Fleming drew a walk to load the bases, Lopez hit a high fly to right to plate Opachich. With runners on first and third, Gillan crushed a ball into the left center gap to clear the bases.
The Bisons recaptured the lead, 7-3, in the bottom of the seventh when J.J. Guitierrez hit a sacrifice fly to left field and Bolden hit a three-run home run to right field with two outs.
JU and Lipscomb will play game two of the series on Saturday at 3 p.m. ET and will be the first radio broadcast on 1010XL this season as Barry Milligan provides the play-by-play. The Dolphin Pre-Game Show will begin at 2:45 p.m. ET.
