March 15, 2008
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The early and often runs from the beginning of the season were not to be found on this night as the JU baseball team was shut out by Lipscomb, 10-0, Saturday evening in a two-hour delayed contest at Ken Dugan Field.
JU (12-3, 6-2), which lost consecutive games for the first time this season, failed to score a run on a contest for the first time in 2008 while dropping its first A-Sun series of the year.
Lipscomb (7-7, 5-3), which earned its first series win over the Dolphins, scored five runs in the first four innings and took advantage of six Dolphin errors.
"We came out flat and made a lot of mistakes in every area," said JU head coach Terry Alexander. "We have to find way to refocus and get back on track. Things came pretty easy to us to open the year and now we need to learn how to react when we are faced with some adversity. It's all part of the process with a new squad."
Sophomore Carson Andrew (3-1) was tagged with the loss after allowing five runs (three earned) on six hits with a walk and a strikeout in three innings.
Brandon McClurg (2-0) earned the win after scattering three hits with three walks and nine strikeouts in seven scoreless innings.
Junior right fielder Thomas Myers led the Dolphins by going 2-for-4 with a pair of singles.
Brandon CaDavid led the Lipscomb offense by going 2-for-4 with three RBI while Jo Jo Gutierrez, Justin Sanders and Charles Williams each finished with multiple hits.
The Bisons took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Allen Bolden scored from third on an infielder grounder by Blake Bratcher with one out.
LU increased the advantage to 4-0 in the bottom of the second after scoring three runs on three hits, while taking advantage of two Dolphin errors. CaDavid drove in the first run with an RBI single, Gutierrez hit an RBI double off the top of the left-field wall and a run scored from third on a throwing error which would have ended the inning.
The Bisons made it 5-0 in the bottom of the third when CaDavid hit an RBI double to left center with two outs. LU increased the lead to 7-0 in the bottom of the fifth when Ryan Wilkins hit an RBI single and CaDavid drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to left field.
The Bisons made it 8-0 in the bottom of the seventh when Ben Williams drove in a run with a bunt single to first.
LU added two more runs in the bottom of the eighth when Shane Simpkins hit an RBI single and another run scored due to a Dolphin throwing error which would have ended the inning.
JU and Lipscomb will play the series finale on Sunday at 2 p.m. ET. The contest will be available on ASun.TV on JUDolphins.com and can also be followed on GameTracker.
