April 11, 2008
BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Junior right fielder Thomas Myers belted a three-run homer in the first inning and freshman Steve Eagerton notched his second save in as many games to lead the JU baseball team to an 8-5 win over Campbell, Friday afternoon in Game One of a doubleheader at Taylor Field.
JU (20-13, 11-8), which has now scored a run in the first inning in 22-of-33 games, scored four runs on five hits in the first inning to jump out to a big lead for the second straight game.
CU (12-22, 6-13), which left a game-high eight runners on base, dropped its fourth consecutive game to the Dolphins.
"We did a nice job of getting on them early because Campbell is a tough team to play at home," said JU head coach Terry Alexander. "Steve did a great job of getting us out of a jam in the ninth when things started to get a little interesting."
Senior Matt Dobbins (4-2) earned the win after allowing three runs on six hits with two walks and three strikeouts in 5.2 innings of work. Eagerton recorded the save after getting the final two outs with runners on second and third.
Hunter Ford (1-2) was tagged with the loss after allowing five runs on eight hits in 1.2 innings.
Brandon Scott went 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI to lead the Camels.
JU jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the top of the first when junior designated hitter Dan Maier hit an RBI single and Myers hit a three-run homer.
Ferreira led off the inning with a single to right and then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore second baseman Chuck Opachich. Junior catcher Jeremy Gillan followed with a single through the left side to advance Ferreira to third, before Maier pulled a ball through the left side to drive him in. In the next at-bat, Myers clubbed a 0-1 pitch over the left-field wall to clear the bases.
The Camels cut the deficit to 5-1 in the bottom of the second when Mike Causey hit an RBI single through the left side with two outs.
The Dolphins increased the lead to 6-1 in the top of the third when freshman third baseman Jamaal Hawkins hit a sacrifice fly.
With one out, Lopez singled through the left side and then advanced to second on a single up the middle by freshman left fielder Chris Connelly. After sophomore first baseman Alex Martinez loaded the bases with a single to left, Hawkins plated Lopez with a high fly to right.
CU cut the deficit to 6-2 in the bottom of the fifth when Ryan Hamme hit a sacrifice fly to center field.
The Camels threatened with the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the seventh but Witkowski got Brian Gana to ground weakly to Martinez at first to end the inning.
JU increased the margin to 8-3 in the top of the eighth when Lopez hit solo home run and Ferreira recorded an RBI triple.
Lopez led off the inning by serving the first pitch down the left-field line for his second homer of the season. With two outs, Hawkins drew a walk and then scored from first when Ferreira pulled a ball down the right-field line.
CU cut the deficit to 8-5 in the bottom of the ninth when Ryan Hamme hit a solo shot to right and Scott hit an RBI double to left field.
Game 2 will begin around 30 minutes after the end of Game 1. JU and Campbell will complete their three-game set on Saturday at 1 p.m. The game can be followed on GameTracker on JUDolphins.com.
