Baseball falls in Game Two to Florida Gulf Coast, 4-1

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Senior designated hitter Matt Dobbins went 3-for-4 with an RBI and junior first baseman Jeremy Gillan extended his hitting streak to 11 games but the JU baseball team fell to Florida Gulf Coast, 4-1, in Game Two of a doubleheader Friday evening at John Sessions Stadium.

JU (22-17, 11-12), which has lost back-to-back home games for only the second time this season, left six runners on base and did not record an extra-base hit.

FGCU (28-12, 18-5), which finished with a game-high eight runners left on base, got three of its four runs with two outs.

"Gulf Coast took the wind out of our sails with the home run but we had our chances," said JU head coach Terry Alexander. "We need to come away with a win tomorrow to keep ourselves in the top half of the conference standings and give us a positive going into the week."

Casey Coleman (5-2) earned the win after allowing one unearned run on five hits with two walks and five strikeouts in seven innings. Chris Sale notched his second save of the year by hurling two shutout innings to close the game.

Freshman Matt Loosen (4-2) was tagged with the loss after allowing three runs (two earned) on three hits with five walks and two strikeouts in five innings.

The Dolphins jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third when Dobbins hit an RBI single with two outs.

With two outs, junior left fielder Kyle Fleming reached on a throwing error by Eagle shortstop Stephen Wickens and then advanced to third on a single to left center by Gillan. In the next at-bat, Dobbins ripped a single to right center to score Fleming.

The Eagles took a 2-1 lead in the top of the fourth when Vinnie Scarduzio hit a two-run homer to right center with two outs.

FGCU increased the margin to 3-1 in the top of the fifth when Ozzie Borrell hit a sacrifice fly to center.

The Eagles made it 4-1 in the top of the seventh when Borrell hit an RBI single through the left side with two outs.
