JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Junior catcher Jeremy Gillan extended his hitting streak to 12 games by going 3-for-5 while senior designated hitter Matt Dobbins chipped in with three hits but the JU baseball team could not avoid the sweep with an 8-5 loss to Florida Gulf Coast, Saturday afternoon at John Sessions Stadium.
JU (22-18, 11-13), which was swept for the second time this season at home, left a game-high 14 runners on base in the contest.
FGCU (29-12, 19-5), which notched its fourth conference sweep of the season, took the finale after scoring six runs on six hits in the first two innings.
"Things did not go the way we wanted to this weekend," said JU head coach Terry Alexander. "Each game was close and things could have gone differently for us with a big play or two but Florida Gulf Coast were the ones who made them. We are not hitting on all cylinders right now."
Freshman Sean Green (1-4) was tagged with the loss after allowing six runs (four earned) on five hits with two walks and a strikeout in 1.1 innings. Freshman Steve Eagerton kept the Dolphins in the contest by allowing only one run on seven hits with a walk and a strikeout in 5.1 innings of relief.
J.J. Crumbley (6-2) got the win after hurling 4.1 innings of scoreless relief in which he scattered five hits, walked two and struck out two.
Along with Gillan and Dobbins, senior center fielder Kevin Ferreira, senior shortstop Matt Lopez, sophomore first baseman Alex Martinez and sophomore second baseman Chuck Opachich each tallied multiple hits.
Ozzie Borrell led the Eagle offense by finishing by going 4-for-4 with two doubles and five RBI.
The Eagles took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first when Borrell hit a two-run double to left center and Casey Coleman hit a sacrifice fly to center.
The Dolphins cut the deficit to 3-1 in the bottom of the first when Dobbins hit an RBI double with two outs. With two outs, Gillan hit a single through the left side and then scored when Dobbins hit a double off the left field wall.
FGCU increased the lead to 6-1 in the top of the second when Graig Smith hit a solo homer to left to lead off the inning and Borrell hit a two-run single to right field.
JU cut the margin to 6-2 in the bottom of the second when Ferreira hit an RBI single with two outs.
The Dolphins made it 6-3 in the bottom of the third when Martinez hit an RBI single.
With one out, Dobbins and junior right fielder Thomas Myers recorded back-to-back infield singles before Martinez drove in Dobbins with a high chop base hit to left field by Martinez.
With one out, Opachich hit a base hit up the middle and then stole second. With two outs, sophomore third baseman Tony Bernazard drew a walk before Ferreira hit a single back up the middle to score Opachich.
The Eagles made it 7-3 in the top of the seventh when Vinnie Scarduzio hit a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded.
FGCU increased the margin to 8-3 in the top of the eighth when Borrell hit a sacrifice fly to center.
JU rallied for two run in the ninth, to make it 8-5, when Lopez hit an RBI single and freshman third baseman Jamaal Hawkins drove in a run with a grounder to third.
JU will take a week off for exams before returning to Atlantic Sun Conference action at Stetson, beginning on Saturday, April 26 with a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
