WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Seeking its ninth straight title, the Jacksonville University track & field team started off solid on day one of the two-day Atlantic Sun Indoor Championships on Friday, Feb. 21. Jacksonville leads with 70 points, followed by Kennesaw State and ETSU (34), Lipscomb (27) and USC Upstate (26) rounding out the top five.
"It was the strongest first day we have ever had," said Head Coach Ron Grigg. "We started with some injury and illness adversity to start the day, but then we got on a very nice roll. We plan to have a similar effort tomorrow."
Stormm Phillips and Petra Munkacsy earned first and second, respectively, in the indoor pentathlon, as Phillips earned 3,474 points and Munkacsy recorded 3,198 points. The women finished 1-and-2 in the pentathlon 60-meter hurdles in 8.98 seconds and 9.11 seconds, fourth (1.54m) and ninth (1.39m) in the pentathlon high jump, second (10.45m) and third (10.11m) in the pentathlon shot put, first (5.70m) and third (5.13m) in the pentathlon long jump, and Munkacsy earned second (2:31.28) and Phillips fifth (2:39.74) in the pentathlon 800-meter run.
Shanique Walker recorded a conference and school record in the 60-meter hurdles prelims, crossing in 8.27 seconds. The finals will take place tomorrow.
Taylor Story also gave a great performace in the high jump, setting a new JU record in her second-place finish. Story reached 1.74m (5-08.50), besting the previous from 2011 (5-07.75).
In the 3,000-meter run, Svenja Meyer crossed in 9:58.19 for fifth, while Caitlin Marino earned 12th in 10:41.66.
Courtney Walker, Phillips, Taylor Story and Kaitlyn Taylor finished second through fifth, respectively, in the long jump. Walker led with 6.00m, followed by 5.91m, 5.84m and 5.80m. Shanique Walker took eighth in 5.58m.
In the shot put, Samantha Turner, Kree Clark and Sally Marie Futch recorded distances good for second, third and seventh respectively, behind Kennesaw State’s Shermaine Pinkard. Turner tossed 13.17m, Clark 13.02m and Futch 12.15m.
Action at the 2014 Atlantic Sun Indoor Championships concludes on Saturday.
