JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Jacksonville University women’s track & field team will open its outdoor season this Saturday, March 22, at the UCF Black & Gold Challenge.
The University of Central Florida is hosting the competition in Orlando. Tentatively, the field events are scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m. with the javelin and run through 3:30 p.m. The running events will happen on a rolling schedule, starting at 3:30 p.m.
Behind the 2014 Atlantic Sun Coach of the Year Ron Grigg, the indoor team earned its ninth straight Atlantic Sun Women’s Indoor Track & Field Championship in February and the outdoor squad is eager to continue their winning strides as well.
Jacksonville is looking to match its accomplishments from the indoor season and capture a ninth consecutive Atlantic Sun Women’s Outdoor Track & Field Championship in May.
The Dolphins have been the reigning champions since 2006 and were the runner-up in both 2001 and 2000. Nine Dolphins have also been named the Most Valuable Performer, including Shanique Walker (2013), Akeela Bravo (2012), Stacey Young (2011), Charlene Charles (2010), Natasha Harvey (2009/2008), Janel Grooms (2007), and Janita Ocana (2006). Monique Tubbs was the first Dolphin to earn the honor in 2003.
