Jacksonville Tops the A-Sun In NCAA APR Awards For a Second Straight Year
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Jacksonville University athletics proudly staked claimed four NCAA Public Recognition Awards, based on the most recent multi-year Academic Progress Rate as Women’s golf, men’s cross country, women’s cross country and indoor track & field were all honored on Wednesday (May 7).
The four teams representing the Dolphins equal the most by an Atlantic Sun this season and marks the second straight season Jacksonville has led the conference in Public Recognition Awards. Jacksonville shares the top spot with Stetson this season with four each combining for eight of the 13 teams recognized from the A-Sun.
The awards are given each year to teams with APRs in the top 10 percent in each sport. This year marks the fifth consecutive and eighth recognition in the last nine years by the men’s cross country team. It is the third year for the indoor track & field program, and second for women’s cross country. Women’s golf was honored for the first time.
This season all of the honored programs from the Atlantic Sun achieved an APR of 997 or higher, with an outstanding mark of 12 APRs at a perfect 1,000. This report is based on NCAA Division I Academic Progress Rate (APR) data submitted by the institution for the 2009-10, 2010-11, 2011-12 and 2012-13 academic years.
The 1,049 teams publicly recognized by the NCAA for high achievement represent 631 women’s teams and 418 men’s or mixed squads. In 2013, 976 teams were recognized. The scores required to be in the top ten ranged from 980 to a perfect 1,000, depending on the sport, with the majority of top 10 teams earning a perfect APR.
Each year, the NCAA honors selected Division I sports teams by publicly recognizing their latest multiyear NCAA Division I Academic Progress Rate (APR). This announcement is part of the overall Division I academic reform effort and is intended to highlight teams that demonstrate a commitment to academic progress and retention of student-athletes by achieving the top APRs within their respective sports. Specifically, these teams posted multiyear APRs in the top 10 percent of all squads in each sport.
The APR provides a real-time look at a team’s academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete on scholarship. The APR accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation and provides a measure of each team’s academic performance.
Multiyear APRs for all Division I sports teams, including the teams receiving public recognition, will be announced May 14. That announcement also will include APP penalties for low-performing teams, teams subject to postseason ineligibility and head coach APRs.
