MIAMI, Fla.-  The Jacksonville University volleyball team remained undefeated at 9-0 and claimed its third tournament title after straight set victories over South Dakota State and University of Tennessee-Chattanooga on Friday night.

The Dolphins continue their road trip Wednesday, Sept. 18 when they face Central Florida at 7 p.m.

Jacksonville 3, South Dakota State 0
(25-22, 25-23, 25-16)

Sophomores Gabriela Roman and Sammie Strausbaugh powered the Dolphins over South Dakota State in game one of Friday’s double-header. Roman lead the attack for the Dolphins with a match-high 14 kills, adding nine digs, and Strausbaugh chipped in with 12 kills and seven digs. Kendall Courtney also contributed with the game’s lone double-double on 35 assists and 10 digs.

The Jackrabbits trailed most of the match but were always in close range. Jacksonville enjoyed an early 5-1 advantage in the opening set until the Jacks battled to put themselves within two, 7-5.  After trading a pair of 3-0 runs and multiple errors, the Dolphins pushed until they reached set point. Stuck at 24 points for three plays, an attack error on South Dakota sealed the frame and put JU up 1-0.

Both teams hit at their worst in set two but it ran similar to the first.  While the third set saw the first tie of the game, Jacksonville dominated the period, outhitting the Jackrabbits .308 to .054. en route to the match win.

(25-22, 25-20, 25-10)

Reducing the Mocs to a .089 hitting percentage, Jacksonville’s defense allowed them to roll to its fourth straight-set victory of the season.

Though the teams were neck and neck in score, neither had hit particularly well. Errors factored heavily in the match and Jacksonville won its first two sets on Moc errors. In fact, with Jacksonville trailing by one, 20-19, in the first set, the team scored four of its next six points on either service or attack errors.

After taking an early 6-1 edge, the Dolphins held Chattanooga at bay in the final set and cruised to a 25-15 match win.  

Strausbaugh and Taylor Nyquist each recorded double-doubles in the game. Strausbaugh had 12 kills and 10 digs and Nyquist added 10 kills and 13 digs.
