@JUVolleyball Hosts FGCU Tuesday Night
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – With a spot already clinched in the 2013 Atlantic Sun Championship, the No. 3 Jacksonville University volleyball squad is looking to continue its undefeated streak at Swisher, currently 10-0, when they host No. 5 Florida Gulf Coast Tuesday night at 7 p.m.
The Fins (22-3 overall, 11-2 A-Sun) most recently swept cross-town rival North Florida, 3-0, on Nov. 1. They hit their second-highest kill mark of the season (50), behind the 52 they recorded against Charleston Southern on Sept. 6. They also recorded 43 assists for fifth-most in a three-set match and their combined .312 attack percentage is good for sixth-best this season.
In conference, they are first in service aces per set (1.72 avg/s) for a total of 162. They are second in five other categories: hitting percentage (.259), opponent hitting percentage (.182), assists per set (12.82), kills per set (13.81) and blocks per set (2.24). They round out at ninth in digs per set with 13.27.
Seniors Kylie Jacob and Alyssa Robertson are first and second, respectively, in both hitting percentage and blocks per set. Jacob has recorded a conference third-best .342 and fourth-best 1.01 blocks per set, while Robertson has managed .306 and 0.94 blocks per set, respectively. Jacob is also third in kills per set with 2.50.
Fellow senior Kendall Courtney has the advantage in assists per set with 10.29, is third in both hitting percentage (.302) and digs per set (2.26), and is tied in second with Taylor Nyquist in service aces per set with an A-Sun second-best 0.32 sa/set. Nyquist is also fourth in both kills per set (2.11) and digs per set (2.00).
Sophomores Sammie Strausbaugh and Gabriela Roman are 1-and-2 in kills per set with 3.24 and 2.74, respectively, and Strausbaugh also leads the conference in service aces per set with 0.35 sa/set. She is second on the team in digs per set with 2.90. Roman is third in blocks per set (0.61), while freshman Rachel Miller holds the advantage in digs per set with 3.07.
Strausbaugh, Courtney and Nyquist’s service aces per set numbers are good for 1-2-3 in the conference.
JACKSONVILLE vs. FLORIDA GULF COAST (Nov. 5)
The last meeting between the Dolphins and the Eagles was during JU’s first conference match of the season on Sept. 20. The Fins swept, 3-0, at FGCU (25-20, 25-20, 25-19) and led with a .300 hitting percentage to FGCU’s .180.
No. 5 FGCU (12-15 overall, 8-6 A-Sun) most recently took out USC Upstate, 3-1, on Nov. 2 on its home court, 25-23, 16-25, 25-19, 25-22.
In conference, the Eagles are second in digs per set (15.37) and fourth in assists per set (11.92), kills per set (12.82) and blocks per set (1.82). They’re also fifth in hitting percentage (.208), seventh in opponent hitting percentage (.227) and ninth in service aces per set (0.94).
Olivia Mesner leads the Eagles in hitting percentage (.331) and is followed by Kaitlin Holm (.262) and Karina Mambuca (.235). Mambuca tops in blocks per set (0.84), while Mesner is second (0.70 blk/set). In kills per set, Jessica Barnes is first (3.20), Holm is second (3.03 k/s) and Mesner rounds out the top three (2.82 k/s). Gigi Meyer controls with an A-Sun third-best 10.56 assists per set and has tallied 0.21 service aces per set. Whitney Masters leads with 4.06 digs per set, ahead of Christine Pinder (3.25 d/s) and Mambuca (2.31 d/s).
