Jacksonville Picked Second in A-Sun Preseason Poll

Atlantic Sun Release

MACON, Ga.
– The Atlantic Sun released both its preseason poll and awards on Thursday for women’s soccer, with Jacksonville University picked to finish second in the league race in 2013. In addition, senior defender Ally Lee was named the Atlantic Sun Defender of the Year by a vote of the conference’s head coaches as well as its fans.

If the conference race stays true to the results of this year’s coach’s poll, the 2013 season should prove to be wide open. In a vote conducted among the 10 head coaches, JU was slotted second, coming in behind only preseason favorite Florida Gulf Coast. The Dolphins were one of five schools to land one first-place vote, while FGCU held the other five. Not only were the first-place votes split, but a mere two points separated Jacksonville from Kennesaw State, the team pegged into the fifth spot in the poll.

There is no doubt that one key to JU’s season is the play of Lee in the center of the defense. A year after being named First Team All-Atlantic Sun and to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-Southeast Region Third Team, the Dolphin star was lauded by coaches and fans alike, picking up the Preseason Defender of the Year award and a First Team All-Atlantic Sun nod. Lee becomes the eighth Dolphin player under Head Coach Brian Copham to be named to the Preseason All-Atlantic Sun team and the first ever to be named a Player of the Year in one of the three POY categories.

Jacksonville fans can get a sneak preview of this year’s team when the Dolphins travel for an exhibition match at Valdosta State on Aug. 16. The regular season kicks off on Aug. 23 with a 7 p.m. meeting against the Flagler Saints at Southern Oak Stadium. Two days later, the Dolphins welcome in the Miami Hurricanes for a 2 p.m. clash.
