BOCA RATON, Fla. -- Kylie Jacob and Sammie Strausbaugh combined for 22 kills to lead the Jacksonville University volleyball team to a 3-1 win over SE Louisiana on Saturday afternoon [25-21, 18-25, 25-9, 25-15]. The victory completed a 3-0 opening weekend for the Dolphins at the FAU Invitational and gives the program its best season start in more than 15 years.
JU won 3-1 matches over Bethune-Cookman and host Florida Atlantic on Friday.
“I am very proud of our team effort this weekend. We were able to play a high level of volleyball and also fight through some adversity,” said head coach Michelle Collier. “We have a great group of girls who are determined to work hard and become the best team we can become.”
Jacob finished with 12 kills in the match while Strausbaugh added 19 digs to her 10 kills to help earn her a spot on the all-tournament team. She was joined there by teammates Alyssa Robinson and tournament MVP Kendall Courtney. Courtney put the finishing touches on her stellar weekend on Saturday by landing seven kills in her 11 attempts (.636) while adding 10 digs and 35 assists.
JU and SE split the first two sets of the match by scores of 25-21 & 18-25. The Dolphins came alive hitting over 34 percent as a team in the final two sets to claim 25-9, 25-15 victories and take the match.
“This weekend was a good start to our season, but it also help us see our weakness and what we need to work on for our next matches,” added Collier.
JU looks to build upon the hot start at home next weekend when the JU Tournament Presented By Hilton Garden Inn - Homewood Suites comes to Swisher Gymnasium. The Dolphins match up against Charleston Southern, Mississippi Valley State and FAU. Action begins on Friday.
