JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Wednesday Oct. 9, the Jacksonville University volleyball team will host non-conference Bethune-Cookman at 7 p.m. This will be the second time this season the two teams have competed; Jacksonville beat Bethune-Cookman, 3-1, in its first match of the year on Aug. 30 as part of the FAU Invitational. On Friday Oct. 11, JU will travel up the road to take on Atlantic Sun foe North Florida at 8 p.m.

Jacksonville is eighth in the nation in aces per set (1.88), having 113 in 60 sets. It is also tied for 13th with four other schools for W-L percentage at .875.

Leading in offense for Jacksonville, Sammie Strausbaugh has recorded 3.38 kills per set, totaling 189 kills in 56 sets. Gabriela Roman (2.76 k/set), Kylie Jacob (2.32 k/set) and Taylor Nyquist (2.17 k/set) contribute to the top four.

Kendall Courtney leads with 0.40 serve aces per set, tallying 24 thus far. The senior has recorded 152 service aces in her career and is just two shy from becoming the career leader in the Atlantic Sun with 154. Belmont’s Kayla Albritton (2007-10) currently leads with 153 total service aces. Courtney also takes the top spot in assists per set with 10.32, while Jizzian Gesualdo follows with 2.81.

On defense, Jacob leads JU in blocks with 1.08 per set, tallying 65.0 total blocks – 10 solo and 55 assists. Alyssa Robertson is second (0.80 blk/s) with 48.0 total blocks. Freshman Rachel Miller tops JU in digs per set with 3.14 and Strausbaugh follows with 3.07.


The Dolphins sit 14-2 overall and 5-1 in the Atlantic Sun. This past weekend they swept their A-Sun matches and are on a four-match win streak. Prior to A-Sun play that began on Sept. 20, the Dolphins won nine of their first 10 matches.

Bethune-Cookman (4-16, 3-1 MEAC) won its two most recent matches, sweeping both North Carolina A&T and North Carolina Central, 3-0, on their home court. But, B-C stands 1-7 on the road.

All-time against the Wildcats, the Dolphins are 34-1. In their last meeting on Aug. 30, the Dolphins won 3-1 [26-24, 25-13, 23-25, 25-18].

For the Wildcats’ offense, sophomore outside hitters Delicia Pierre and Rhea Simon are first and second in kills and service aces, respectively. Pierre tops the squad with 3.16 kills per set and 0.46 aces per set, while Simon has recorded 2.25 kills per set and 0.29 service aces per set. On defense, Aria Cormier leads with 0.77 blocks per set, tallying 24.0 total.


North Florida lost its most recent match at Kennesaw State on Oct. 5, 2-3. Overall, the Ospreys are 5-11 and 2-4 in the Atlantic Sun. On home court they stand 2-2.

Senior outside hitter Anna Budinska leads North Florida in kills per set (3.66), tallying 194 in 53 sets, while senior setter Britt Claessens tops in service aces per set with 0.38. On defense, junior middle blocker Cameron McGuire is first in blocks per set with 1.16 and junior defensive specialist/libero Cari Whitmire has recorded 4.30 digs per set with 241 total in 56 sets.
