JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Jacksonville women’s and men’s cross country teams are gearing up for their final meet of the season before the Atlantic Sun Championship on Nov. 2. JU is traveling to Tallahassee to compete at the FSU Invitational at Apalachee Regional Park this Friday.
The women will race a 5k at 6:20 p.m. and the men will follow in an 8k at 6:45 p.m.
“This’ll be the next step in our progression,” head coach Ron Grigg said. “The competition will be slightly better than it was at Florida runners. The course will be more difficult and it’s the next logical progression to our toughest competition and the toughest course at the [Atlantic Sun] Conference Championship.”
JU ran the course last year, Grigg said, so the returners have experience. Freshman Katy Solis ran the course as a high school senior for the high school pre-state and state meet, recording her personal best.
“The top two runners on the women’s side have experience there and the top two men, as well as the high school seniors from last year … also have experience in the course,” Grigg explained.
Coach said he believes Svenja Meyer will have a “chance to challenge for the win” like she did at the FLrunners.com 14 Invitational on Sept. 27., where she placed second. On the men’s side, Grigg is excited to see how the freshmen handle their first five-mile race.
“We’ve had some good training. It’s just a matter of keeping everybody healthy … but we’re making progress.”
Results will be posted on Half-Mile Timing.
