JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Artis Gilmore needed only a brief window of time in his playing days to make an impact on the Jacksonville University community that has continued to this day. Earlier this week at Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Arena, he was honored for all he has meant to the university and the city.

In a surprise ceremony that included several NBA legends – former teammates and rivals of Gilmore’s – in attendance on Tuesday night, October 8 was officially designated as Artis Gilmore Day in the city of Jacksonville. In addition, a banner was unveiled featuring Gilmore’s No. 53 in JU green and gold that was raised to the rafters of JVM during the third quarter of last night’s NBA exhibition featuring the New Orleans Pelicans and Orlando Magic.

Joining Gilmore at the ceremony on Tuesday night were former players such as Rick Barry, Julius Erving, George Gervin, Christian Laettner and David Thompson. JU basketball coaches Cliff Warren and Yolett McPhee-McCuin were also in attendance.
