Queen Alford Named to the Atlantic Sun Preseason Team

MACON, Ga. – Jacksonville University’s sophomore guard Queen Alford was unanimously voted onto the Atlantic Sun’s Preseason First Team on Tuesday afternoon. Included in the release was the league’s coaches and media poll in which the women’s basketball team was picked to finish seventh and eighth.

In her freshman campaign, Alford led the Dolphins with 11.7 points while adding 6.3 rebounds and 1.0 steals per game. Earning A-Sun Freshman of the Year and Newcomer of the Week in the final two weeks of the regular season, the young guard put on a show in the last nine conference games averaging 16.7 points and 8.6 rebounds. During the stretch, she also shot 51 percent from the field and dazzled beyond the arc with a 63 percent shooting accuracy (15-24).

“Queen is a tireless worker and a winner,” said Head Coach Yolett McPhee-McCuin. “We are excited about her accomplishment and look forward to her helping us reach our team goal; in the future, we want to win an Atlantic Sun Title”.

The Dolphins wrapped up last season sitting in the seventh spot, with an overall record of 11-19 and 7-11 in the conference. This year, A-Sun coaches peg the Dolphins to finish seventh while the media have them at eighth.

“I’m excited about the opportunity we have this year to compete in the Atlantic Sun conference.  Our goal is to not finish seventh, and our hope is to exceed the expectations of many”.

The Dolphins start the 2013-14 season on the road at Florida A&M on Friday, Nov. 8 and their home opener is set for Wednesday, Nov. 20 with the team hosting Edward Waters at 7 p.m.
