Dolphins Return to Regular Season Play on Sunday
Taking a slight break from regular-season action last week, the Jacksonville University women’s basketball team returns to its 2013-14 schedule. Billed as the official home-opener, the Fins will host Georgia Southern at Swisher Gymnasium on Sunday, Oct. 24 at 1 p.m.
Looking to gain the advantage in the 2-2 all-time series stalemate, JU’s wins occurred at home and the team hopes to keep that win streak intact.
JU’S LAST GAME: A BALANCED ATTACK
In an exhibition matchup with Edward Waters College last Wednesday, Jacksonville played well on both sides of the ball to cruise to an 83-39 win over the Lady Tigers.
Four Dolphin players finished the night in double digits and two had a double-double.
Senior forward Jade Cargill led the Fins with 19 points and 11 rebounds including five offensive boards. Sophomore guard Queen Alford wrapped the night with 17 points, 11 rebounds, and seven steals.
Shooting 54 percent from the field (31-for-47), Jacksonville’s defensive pressure forced 30 turnovers on which they scored 29 points.
Forward Kimberly Dawkins and guard Sherranda Reddick have amassed solid numbers in their freshmen campaigns. Coming off of the bench against EWC, Dawkins recorded six points, three blocks and a steal while Reddick scored 11 points with five boards and three assists.
Georgia Southern (1-3) has had a rocky start to its season. Taking losses to Auburn, Kentucky and Cal State Northridge, the Eagles have yet to win on the road. Junior guard Anna Claire Knight leads the team with 13.5 points per game. Newcomer Briana Jones has been another huge factor for Eagles, previously playing for James Madison, the sophomore forward is averaging 8.3 PPG and 10.5 RPG.
