Katy G. Solis was a stalwart on Coach Sommer's Estero girls championship teams. During her senior season, Katy initially indicated she would head to Ole Miss upon graduation but eventually went to compete for Coach Griggs and the Jacksonville University dolphins. Katy just finished her freshman cross-country season for the Dolphins being named to the All-Freshman team for the Atlantic Sun Conference. During her high school career, Katy went 17:58 for the 5K in 2012, finishing second in 3A. Her Track PR's are 5:12 in the 1600 and 10:55 in the 3200.
How did you prepare over the summer for your freshman season?
The preparation for my freshman season was through summer training with Coach Sommer. He kept me fit and tried to prepare me for the changes to come and incorporated workouts I had from Coach Grigg, my new coach, to ensure I was going to be ready for college running.
What really motivated you to do the necessary training?
What really motivated me to do the necessary training was the idea that I wanted to be a contributor to JU's team. I didn't want to be just another runner to the team, but something more. I had the same motivation I had when I first entered high school and saw the older girls and wanted to be great like they were. I had goals in mind for my college career and in order to accomplish them I had to keep my desire, dedication, and discipline alive.
