JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Jacksonville University men’s basketball player Vince Martin on Monday became the second Dolphin to win Newcomer of the Week honors from the Atlantic Sun Conference this season. The graduate point guard from Marietta, Ga. led JU to victory last week with 15 points, eight rebounds, five steals and four assists in a 61-47 defeat of South Carolina State.
Those numbers are nothing new to the Jacksonville floor general. Though the 15 points set a new career-high for the transfer from Young Harris College, Martin has had three games with at least eight boards, three games with five steals, and has had eight contests with at least four assists. An indispensable part of the lineup, he leads the Dolphins in minutes per game (31.6) and assists (5.0), and tops the A-Sun charts in steals (2.2).
Martin joins freshman Marcel White as a conference award winner this season. White took home Newcomer of the Week honors in November for his performances in games against Wake Forest and Florida A&M.
Martin leads Jacksonville into Atlantic Sun play beginning tonight with a home game at Swisher Gym against the Mercer Bears. On Jan. 1, the Dolphins will host the Kennesaw State Owls at Swisher. Each game tips off at 7 p.m.
