JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - In the heart of conference season it may not surprise you that the Jacksonville University women’s basketball team spent the evening of February 10th on the court. What may surprise you is that the time spent was not for their own practice, but to reach out to the children of the DuPont YMCA basketball teams in Jacksonville, Florida. The Dolphins spent the afternoon talking to 7U, 8U and 9U teams and their families about their experience of being collegiate student-athletes and the hard work that it took to get there.
The children were able to play their favorite Fins in a game of 1 on 1 and later received autographs. “It was a great opportunity to build relationships with children in the local community and to excite them about the possibilities for their future,” said current junior guard LaDeyah Forte. “I remember myself at that age and how much I looked up to those older than me playing the game of basketball so we wanted to make sure they had an incredible experience.”
DuPont YMCA Basketball Director Ed Feren said this about the experience his team members received: “The ladies of Jacksonville University showed what they have displayed on the court all year- great heart. It was an event that is sure to last in the memories of all those who got a chance to meet and talk with these fine women.”
The team will spend an afternoon at Wolfson Children’s Hospital on March 21st to visit patients and their families for their next service event.
