JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Jacksonville University softball fell 5-0 to No. 25 Louisville in its 2014 home-opener in the JU Tournament on Friday, Feb. 14.
Scoreless to end the fourth, Louisville (4-2) changed the momentum when the Cardinals tallied two in the top of the fifth and three in the seventh to shutout Jacksonville (3-3).
Kelsi Jones (2-for-3) recorded Louisville’s first run on Brittany Duncan’s RBI single to left. Morgan Meyer, pinch running for Duncan, then scored on Katie Keller’s single to center field. In the seventh, Jones tallied her second run of the game on Duncan’s RBI single down the right field line, advancing Whitney Arion to third. Keller then grounded out to third, Duncan advanced to second, and Maggie Ruckenbrod followed with a 2-RBI double to left to plate Arion and Duncan.
Jones led Louisville offensively, finishing 2-for-3 with two runs and one walk, while both Duncan and Ruckenbrod tallied two RBI apiece.
For the Fins, Emily Sanchez (1-for-2) and Brooke Smith (1-for-2) each recorded one hit, while Victoria Brown garnered two of Jacksonville’s six walks.
In the circle, Brown took her first loss on the season (2-1), striking out three, allowing eight hits, two earned runs and one walk in 6.2 innings. Jessi Walker pitched 0.1 innings, allowing three hits, three earned runs and one walk.
Louisville pitcher Rachel LeCoq (2-1) came in for relief in the bottom of the second for Caralisa Connell, fanning seven, walking two and allowing two hits.
Day two of the JU Tournament continues Saturday morning with Notre Dame and Louisville playing at 9:30 am. Jacksonville will compete in the final two games of the day, facing North Carolina at 2:30 p.m. and Notre Dame at 5:00 p.m.
