Softball Sweeps Saturday

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Jacksonville University softball swept on Saturday, shutting out University of Illinois-Chicago 8-0 in five innings before crushing Southern Illinois 9-2. The Fins improve to 7-5 on the early season.

Against UIC, the Dolphins started their attack from the bottom of the first, scoring three runs. Emily Sanchez recorded a two-RBI single to left to plate Victoria Brown from third and Karson Tuck from second, while Cecile Gomez’s single to right scored pinch runner Jada Power from third.

Jacksonville followed with three runs in the second, one in the third and one in the fifth to run-rule the Flames.

In total, the Dolphins tallied eight runs on 13 hits against UIC’s Elaine Heflin and Alice Fitzpatrick on the mound. Gomez led with three hits, followed by Brown and Tuck with two apiece. Gomez finished the game 3-for-3 with 2 RBI, Brown went 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI, and Tuck recorded 2-for-3 with two runs.

Brown also secured her fourth win on the season in the complete 5.0 inning performance, striking out five and allowing a mere two hits.

In Jacksonville’s nightcap against Southern Illinois, the Fins earned their first back-to-back wins of the year. They opened the top of the first with two runs, following with one in the third, one in the fourth, two in the sixth and three in the seventh. Brown, Codi Kelly and Tuck all scored twice, while Brown, Gomez and Miranda Fleming each tallied two RBI.

Southern Illinois (5-6) crossed home in the bottom of the second and the seventh.

In the circle, Gomez (3-0) allowed two hits, one earned run and struck out two in 4.0 innings. Taylor Rossman came in for three innings of relief, fanning four, allowing two hits, one earned run, and two walks.

Jacksonville concludes play in the JU Wingate by Wyndam Tournament on Sunday, Feb. 23, facing Bethune-Cookman at 5:15 p.m. and Savannah State at 7:30 p.m.
