JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A slow start in the first round dropped the Jacksonville University women’s golf team back in the pack, but the Dolphins began to dig their way out of the hole in Monday afternoon’s second round and will enter the final round on Tuesday in 14th place at the Intercollegiate, hosted by JU at the Marsh Landing Country Club.

The best rounds of the day for Jacksonville were courtesy of Jessica Welch, who began the morning round with a one-over score of 73, but then came back in the afternoon with a three-under 69, one of just eight rounds in the 60s by the field in the second round. Her two-round total of 142 has the junior in a tie for 10th place entering the final round.

Morgan Matchett had the next best rounds of the day for the Dolphins, shooting a 75 in the morning and following that up with a 74 to end at 149 for the day and in a tie for 43rd place. Sabrina Rumbaugh bounced back from a 79 in the first round to shoot 76 in the second round. She is in a tie for 75th place going into Tuesday, while fellow freshman Megan Collins is in a tie for 84th following rounds of 78 and 79. Natalie Schmett struggled early in the day, but recovered with a 76 in the afternoon and is in a tie for 94th overall.

Jacksonville holds a one-shot lead over Florida International, a three-shot advantage over Sam Houston State and a five-shot edge on Michigan. The Dolphins trail Illinois by three strokes and Missouri by six. Florida State will take a seven-shot lead over East Carolina into the final round.

Tomorrow’s round begins with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m.
