Sand Volleyball Falls in Fiesta on Siesta Key

SIESTA KEY, Fla. – Jacksonville University sand volleyball competed in the Fiesta on Siesta Key Tournament over the weekend but didn’t qualify for the team cup results based on the top four finishers in the Fiesta Cup Division.

University of North Florida (316), Georgia State University (310), Florida International University (286), Florida State University (272) and Stetson University (271) finished top five.

In the Gold Division pair tournament 16-team single elimination, No. 2 duo Sammie Strausbaugh and Taylor Nyquist competed to semifinal play. They beat FGCU’s No. 15 Holm and Masters 21-7 and 21-10 and GSU’s No. 10 Button and Olivova 21-17 and 21-19 before falling to UNF’s No. 6 Medina and Hildreth 21-18 and 24-22.

In the Silver Division 16-team single elimination, No. 11 pair Kendall Courtney and Niatha Cullen lost to LSU’s No. 6 Hatcher and Boyle 15-21, 21-17 and 15-12.

In the Sunday Fun Bracket “A” 16-team single elimination, No. 6 duo Lauren Homrich and Rachel Miller fell 25-13 to FAU’s No. 11 Pyle and Galinis.

In the Sunday Fun Bracket “B” 16-team single elimination, No. 4 pair Gabriela Roman and Mayara Prestes defeated GSU’s No. 13 Rohan and Townsend 25-18 before falling to FIU’s No. 12 Monforte and Gluchowicz 25-18.

In the Sunday Fun Bracket “C” 14-team single elimination, No. 2 duo Emily Laskelle and Alyssa Robertson fell in the finals. They beat FIU’s No. 10 Davis and Pasos 27-25, GSU’s No. 11 Smestad and Fourspring 27-25 and eventually lost to FSU’s No. 9 Luke and Sanchez 25-15 in the final round.

Next, Jacksonville will compete as the No. 3 seed in the 2014 Atlantic Sun Sand Volleyball Tournament beginning on Friday, April 18. The Dolphins will face No. 2 Stetson at 11 a.m. in Fort Myers.
