Riding the momentum of an extra inning walkoff win over North Florida on Friday, Jacksonville looks to keep going in the 2014 Atlantic Sun Baseball Tournament on Friday as the Dolphins match-up against Florida Gulf Coast in an elimination game at 7:00 pm on Friday.
The Dolphins earned the five seed after a 13-13 regular season and lost a pitcher's duel in 10 inning against fourth seeded Libscomb on Wednesday night. -On Thursday, Jacksonville rallied from a 6-1 deficit for a 7-6 win in 10 innings. Connor Marabell provided the game winning hit after Braddock Rowe tied the game with a two-run single in the bottom of the ninth. Florida Gulf Coast fell 5-4 to Lipscomb on Thursday night.
LHP Josh Baker is set to start for the Dolphins on Friday. Baker owns a 5.04 ERA this season with a 3-4 record.
For Jacksonville this marks the programs 11th appearance in the A-Sun postseason since joining the league for the 1999 season. It is the Dolphins appearance since 2011 when the ball club captured an at-large bid to the NCAA Regionals. Jacksonville has won the A-Sun Tournament four times (1999, 2003, 2007 and 2009). The program also claimed the 1989 Sun Belt Conference Tournament title.
The 2014 Dolphins brought a five game winning streak against A-Sun competition with them to Fort Myers, a streak that including a three game sweep of Northern Kentucky this past weekend. The recent successes can be attributed to a new-found offensive outburst that has seen Jacksonville post double digit hits in each off the last seven games, the longest such streak by the team since 2011. The Dolphins are hitting .333 with 19 extra base hits and an average of 8.4 runs per game over the span.
Jacksonville’s 3-4 hitters, senior Scott Schaub and sophomore Connor Marabell have led the charge combining for 21 RBI during the stretch. A first team All-Atlantic Sun pick, Schaub enters this week with a 13 game hit streak. He ranks second in the nation with a .425 average and fifth with a .508 on base percentage. Marabell meanwhile ranks sixth in the A-Sun with a .365 overall average and hit .403 this season against A-Sun competition. The team leader with five home runs, he is top 10 in the league in slugging percentage (.529 - 9th) and on base percentage (.429 - 6th).
Jacksonville has used 44 different line-ups this season. The Dolphins lead the A-Sun in stolen bases (67) and ranked second in sacrifice hits (56).
