Men's Varsity 4+ Takes Gold at the SIRA Championships

OAK RIDGE,Tenn. - The Men's Varsity 4+ captured gold at the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Assocation (SIRA) Championships this weekend, while the Men's Novice 4+ and Women's Lightweight 4+ took silver against the top schools in the country. All told, six of the Dolphins' seven entries in the SIRA Championships earned a berth in the grand finals. Junior Montia Rice (Folsom, N.J.), sophomore Bryan Brown (Ballston Lake, N.Y.), sophomore Matthew Grothaus (West Chester, Pa.), junior Sean Duffey (Margate, N.J.) and senior coxswain Peter DeFrank (Nutley, N.J.) rowed the varsity 4+ to first place in a field of 28 boats that included powerhouses like Wake Forest, Georgia, Tulane and Virginia Tech.

The Men's Novice 4+ cruised through a field of 23, finishing first in the preliminary heat and first in the semifinal heat before taking silver in the grand final. Sophomore Ian Hamlyn (Hartsville, S.C.), sophomore Robert Davis (Ponte Vedra, Fla.), junior Tom Wilson (Barrington, R.I.), junior Christian Ahlers (Lingren, Germany) and freshman coxswain Michel Gribble (Englewood, Fla.) pushed the novice 4+ to the front of the pack early, and held on until a furious charge by the Georgia crew in the last five strokes placed them just 1.4 seconds away from gold.

The Women's Lightweight 4+ finished in second place in a field that included the likes of Georgia Tech, Alabama and Tampa.

The Women's Varsity 4+ finished fifth in a field of 29 entries, earning a berth in the grand final after taking their preliminary heat and placing second in the semifinals. The Women's Novice 4+ placed sixth out of 24, beating out the likes of Stetson, Georgia Tech, Florida and Vanderbilt to earn a berth in the grand final.
