Rowing Earns Eight Medals at the First Coast Head Race

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The JU rowing teams opened their 2004-05 season by earning eight medals as the Women's and Men's Championship 4, Men's Novice 4 and Novice 8 won gold in their respective events while the Men's and Women's Championship 8 (silver) and the Women's Championship 8 "A"-squad (bronze) rounded out the top-three finishers at the First Coast Head Race, Saturday on the St. John's River. The Dolphins' second boat in the Men's Championship 8 also recorded a fourth-place finish on the day.
The Men's Championship 4 boat consisting of Bryan Brown, Montia Rice, David Weaver, Rob Davis and coxswain Jeff Buckner finished first (17:09) while UCF "B" (17:36), UCF "A" (17:44) and UCF "C" (18:25) rounded out the rest of the field. The Men's Novice 8 with Steve Hood, Greg Boccieri, Chris Carter, Adam Heine, Rob Neff, Joel Kennison, Mike Scully, Timmy Jones and coxswain Alison McGonegal placed first with a time of 18:44. UCF "A" took second with an 18:56 while UCF "B" (19:41) and Florida State (20:18) rounded out the top four. The Men's Novice 4 boat consisting of Dan Berg, Steve Ezell, Scott Cribbs, Ryan Murgia and coxswain Amanda Soukup finished with a top time of 20:19, two-minutes and five seconds faster than second-place Florida State's 22:24.
Nova Souteastern took first-place with a time of 18:06 in the Women's Championship 8 and UCF "A" took home the gold in the Men's Championship 8 with a 16:14, one second ahead of the JU "A" squad.
"For our first race of the year we wanted to evaluate where we are and what we need to work on," said JU head coach Jim Mitchell. "I feel good about how we placed and I know our kids were glad to compete against somebody other than themselves."
The annual regatta included crews from Embry-Riddle, Florida State, Gainesville Area Rowing, Nova Southeastern and UCF.
