Rowers Earn Three Medals at Head of the Chattahoochee Race

GAINESVILLE, Ga. - The JU rowing teams earned three medals as the Men's Club 4 boat and the Women's Lightweight 8 took gold and the Men's Novice 8 captured silver while four other boats (Men's Club 8, Men's Champ 4, Women's Lightweight 4, Men's Championship 8) placed in the top five at the Head of the Chattahoochee Race, Saturday on the Chattahoochee River/Lake Lanier. The annual regatta included crews from Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, Duke, Florida, Kansas, Miami, North Carolina, Rice, Texas and Xavier.

The Men's Club 4 consisting of Ben Bowerman, Matthew Grothaus, Jesse Brandt, Charlie Allen and coxswain Jessica Marchant placed first with a time of 17:52.0 while the Women's Lightweight 8 boat of Kate Burke, Hannah Bates, Lauren Calhoun, Becky Watt, Lindsey Jackson, Julee Smith, Chrystal Miller, Jamie Venice and coxswain Audrey Sefton earned gold with a mark of 18:39.4. The Men's Novice 8 with Steve Hood, Greg Boccieri, Chris Carter, Adam Heine, Rob Neff, Steve Ezel, Michael Scully, Timmy Jones and coxswain Alison McGonegal finished second to round out the JU top three finisher.

Also finishing in the top five during the day's event were the Women's Lightweight 4 (4th) with a time of 22:27.2, the Men's Club 8 (4th) with a 17:43.8, the Men's Championship 4 (4th) with an 18:56.1 and the Men's Championship 8 (5th) with a 16:20.0.

"Our program has always competed in this event and this was by far the best day that we have had here in a long time," said JU head coach Jim Mitchell. "With the Women's Lightweight 8, the Men's Club 4 and the Men's Novice 8 placing in the top three proves that we did well as a team today."

The Dolphins will next compete in the Florida Fall Classic on Nov. 13, in Melbourne, Fla.
