March 12, 2005
AIKEN, S.C. - The JU rowing teams opened their 2005 spring season by earning the overall team point title as the Women's Varsity 4, the Women's Lightweight 4, the Men's Pair and the Women's Pair took gold while the Women's Novice 4 captured silver and the Men's Novice 4 grabbed the bronze Saturday at the South Eastern Regional Collegiate Sprints Rowing Regatta. The event was cut short for the championship races due to high winds. The annual regatta included crews from Georgia, Georgia Tech, Auburn, UT-Knoxville, Georgia State and Berry College.
The Women's Varsity 4 consisting of Evette Smith, Jessica Tuten, Rachael Pacheco, Nicholette Eagen and Robin Corbo placed first with a time of 5:25.9 in a shortened 1,000-meter race due to high winds. The Women's Lightweight 4 of Lauren Calhoun, Julee Smith, Dru Rooks, Becky Watt and coxswain Audrey Sefton earned gold with a mark of 10:26.4. The Men's Pair with Matthew Grothaus and John Hoffman placed first with an 11:38.5 while the Women's Pair of Hannah Bates and Kate Burke earned gold with a mark of 11:55.6. The Women's Novice 4 finished second and the Men's Novice 4 placed third to round out the JU top three finishers.
"I was really pleased with the way our coxswains stayed composed and focused in the rocky conditions," said JU head coach Jim Mitchell. "Unfortunately all of our boats didn't get to race but the right decision was made to end the competition."
JU will next compete in the Rollins Invitational in Winter Park on Saturday, March 19.
