Rowers Earn Carl Bock Cup With Men's Varsity 8 Win Over UCF

The JU rowing team earned the Carl Bock Cup with a Men's Varsity 8 win over UCF, while the Men's Varsity 4, Men's Junior Varsity 8 and Women's Novice 4 each placed first in their respective races, Saturday at Petrakis Cup on the St. John's River.

The Men's Varsity 8, Women's Lightweight 8, Women's Novice 8, Women's Varsity 4 and Men's Novice 8 each earned silver medals, while the Women's Varsity 8 and Men's Novice 4 took home bronze. The regatta also included crews from UCF, Tulane and Embry Riddle.

The Men's Varsity 4 consisting of coxswain Jessica Marchant, Bryan Brown, David Weaver, Jess Brandt and Robert Davis placed first with a time of 8:04.4. The Men's Junior Varsity 8 of coxswain Michelle Henry, John Hoffman, Adam Heine, Chris Carter, Charlie Allen, Dudley Deshommes, Matt Steinmann, Ben Bowerman and Jesus Dulzaides earned gold with a mark of 7:10.7. The Men's Novice 8 consisting of coxswain Alison McGonegal, Steve Hood, Greg Boccieri, Chris Carter, Adam Heine, Lee Richard, Matt Steinmann, Michael Scully and Timmy Jones also earned gold with a time of 7:01.2

At the conclusion of the day's events, the JU rowing program christened a boat "JJ" in honor of alumnus John Petrakis. Petrakis, a JU graduate in 1973 and long time supporter of the Dolphin rowing program, was nicknamed "JJ" by his mother as a youth.

"We truly enjoyed hosting the Petrakis Cup here at JU for the first time in five years," said JU head coach Jim Mitchell. "I want to thank UCF, Tulane and Embry Riddle for a great day of racing on the St. John's River."

JU will next compete in the FIRA State Championship in Tampa on Saturday, April 9.
