Rowing Wins Seven Medals at the FIRA State Championships

TAMPA, Fla. - The Men's Freshman Novice 8 and the Women's Lightweight 4 won gold medals, while the Men's Varsity 4 and the Men's Junior Varsity 8 took home the silver to lead the JU Rowing teams to seven medals at the Florida Intercollegiate Rowing Association State Championships on Saturday.

The Men's Freshman Novice 8 won its race for the first time since 1983 and the Women's Lightweight 4 won its final for the second consecutive year. The Men's Varsity 8, the Women's Lightweight 8, the Women's Freshman Novice 8 and the Men's Junior Varsity 4 earned bronze medals in their respective races. Other schools competing in the event were Florida State, Florida, UCF, Miami, Florida Tech, Rollins College, Stetson, Berry College and Tampa.

The Men's Freshman Novice 8 with coxswain Alison McGonegal, Jess Brandt, Patrick Lura, Chris Carter, Adam Heine, Lee Richard, Charlie Allen, Matt Steinmann and Greg Boccieri took first place with a time of 6:00.2. The Women's Lightweight 4 consisting of coxswain Audrey Sefton, Kate Burke, Julee Smith, Lauren Calhoun and Becky Watt placed first with a time of 7:55.1.

"This wasn't our best overall performance at this championship, but a couple of our boats did well," said JU head coach Jim Mitchell. "We had some other boats show potential and that should translate well for us in the next two races."

JU will next compete in the SIRA Southern Championships next weekend in Oak Ridge, Tenn.
