Rowing Wins Two Medals in First Day of SIRA Regatta

OAK RIDGE, Tenn. - The Women's Lightweight 4 won gold and the Women's Pair took bronze, while the Men's Varsity 8, the Men's Freshman/Novice 8, the Men's Novice 4 and Women's Freshman/Novice 8 each qualified for the final day of competition as JU Rowing completed its first day at the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association Regatta on Saturday.

The Women's Lightweight 4 breezed through its first heat with a first-place time of 7:50.90 against Virginia Tech, Texas, Alabama and Georgia before moving onto the grand final. In the finals, the Dolphins defeated Georgia Tech, Virginia Tech, Dayton and Tulsa to earn gold with a mark of 7:59.7.

The Women's Pair finished second to Georgia Tech in its qualifying heat with a time of 9:25.29 to reach the final. The Dolphins placed third with a mark of 9:15.81 behind Georgia Tech (8:59.60) and Tennessee-Chattanooga to earn the bronze.

In other qualifying heats, the Men's Varsity 8 finished fourth with a time of 6:26.77 before placing fifth in the semi-finals. The Dolphins will face Texas, Georgia, Tulane, Dayton and Michigan State in the Petite Final on Sunday.

The Men's Freshman/Novice 8 placed third in the qualifying heat with a time of 6:09.28 before finishing third in the semi-finals with a 6:24.93. The squad will face Virginia, Marietta College, Florida Tech, Purdue and Cincinnati in the Grand Final.

The Women's Freshman/Novice 8 finished second in the qualifying heat with a mark of 7:18.48. The Dolphins will face Tennessee, Tulsa, Michigan State, UCF and Purdue in the Grand Final on Sunday.

The Men's Novice 4 placed fourth in its qualifying race with a mark of 7:26.47 and will compete in the "C" Final on Sunday.
