Rowing Completes Final Day at SIRA Regatta

OAK RIDGE, Tenn. - The Men's Freshman/Novice 4 earned a gold medal in the "C" Final while the Men's Varsity 8, the Men's Freshman/Novice 8 and Women's Freshman/Novice 8 each finished fifth as JU Rowing completed the final day at the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association Regatta on Sunday. The Women's Lightweight 4 won gold and the Women's Pair took bronze in the first day of competition on Saturday.
The Men's Varsity 8 finished fifth in the Petite final with a time of 6:20.77 behind Tulane (6:12.60), Texas (6:14.79), Dayton (6:17.15) and Michigan State (6:18.06).
The Men's Freshman/Novice 8 placed fifth with a time of 6:30.23 in the "A" Final behind Virginia (6:17.30), Marietta College (6:23.62), Florida Tech (6:25.62) and Purdue (6:27.60).
The Women's Freshman/Novice 8 also finished fifth in the "A" Final with a mark of 7:36.93 behind Tennessee (7:16.50), UCF (7:20.95), Michigan State (7:25.48) and Purdue (7:28.47).
The Men's Freshman/Novice 4 earned gold in the "C" Final with a time of 7:36.90 ahead of Rhodes College (7:51.03), Wake Forest (7:59.21) and College of Charleston (8:34.43).
On Saturday, the Women's Lightweight 4 breezed through its first heat with a first-place time of 7:50.90 against Virginia Tech, Texas, Alabama and Georgia before moving onto the grand final. In the finals, coxswain Audrey Sefton, Kate Burke, Julee Smith, Lauren Calhoun and Becky Watt defeated Georgia Tech, Virginia Tech, Dayton and Tulsa to earn gold with a mark of 7:59.7.
The Women's Pair finished second to Georgia Tech in its qualifying heat with a time of 9:25.29 to reach the final. Nicholette Eagen and Amanda Bustos placed third with a mark of 9:15.81 behind Georgia Tech (8:59.60) and Tennessee-Chattanooga to earn the bronze.
JU will compete in the Dad Vails Championships in Philadelphia on May 13-14.
