Rowing Qualifies Three Boats for Final Day of Dad Vail Regatta

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Day 1 Results

The Women's Lightweight 4 qualified for tomorrow's event final and the Women's Freshman/Novice 8 and Men's Freshman/Novice 8 each qualified for its respective semifinal heats to lead JU rowing during the first day of competition at the prestigious Dad Vail Regatta, Friday on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia. The Men's Varsity 8 advanced to the Repechage heat before finishing fourth, while the Women's Pair ended its day with a fourth-place finish in the qualifying heats.

The Women's Lightweight 4, consisting of coxswain Audrey Sefton, Kate Burke, Becky Watt, Lauren Calhoun and Julee Smith qualified for tomorrow's final after placing second in Heat 3 with a time of 8:23.83. With the top two boats advancing, JU finished behind Willamette (8:17.18) to earn the final spot. The Dolphins will compete for the Robert Espeseth Trophy in the event final at 2:50 p.m.

The Women's Freshman/Novice 8 with coxswain Amanda Soukup, Jessica Tuten, Lyndsay Blair, Dru Rooks, Rachael Pacheco, Kate Gout, Ashley Flood, Laura Pacheco and Robin Corbo earned the final spot in the semifinal heats with a time of 7:50.53. Connecticut (7:37.46) and St. Joseph's (7:40.31) rounded out the top two spots in the race. The Dolphins will compete in their semifinal heat at 8:24 a.m.

The Men's Freshman/Novice 8 with coxswain Michelle Henry, Jess Brandt, Adam Heine, Chris Carter, Patrick Lura, Lee Richard, Greg Boccieri, Matt Steinmann and Charlie Allen placed third in Heat 4 with a time of 6:32.54 to earn the final spot in the semifinals behind Marietta (6:25.38) and Florida Tech (6:28.74). JU will race in its semifinal heat at 8:45 a.m.

The Men's Varsity 8, consisting of coxswain Jessica Marchant, Monita Rice, Bryan Brown, Robert Davis, John Hoffman, David Weaver, Sean Duffey, Matthew Grothaus and Ian Hamlyn finished fourth in Heat 4 with a time of 6:00.85 behind St. Joseph's (5:49.40), Temple (5:52.21) and Dayton (6:00.41). With the top boats automatically advancing to tomorrow's semifinal and the last place boats being disqualified, the remaining boats from each race were lumped into a four-heat Repechage, in which the top three boats from each heat qualified for the semifinals. In the Heat 3 Repechage, JU finished fourth with a time of 6:30.16 behind Minnesota (6:17.68), Rochester Tech (6:18.52) and Northwestern (6:20.7).

The Women's Pair with Nicholette Eagen and Amanda Bustos placed fourth in Heat 4 with a time of 8:55.87 behind St. Thomas (8:12.90), Chicago (8:16.57) and Toronto (8:22.72) with Manhattan finishing fifth with an 8:59.90.
