Rowing earns five medals at First Coast Head Race

The JU rowing teams opened their 2006-07 season by earning five medals as the Men's Varsity 8 "A" took gold, while the Men's Varsity 4 and the Men's Varsity 8 "B" captured silver and the Women's Varsity "A" earned a bronze at the First Coast Head Race, Saturday on the St. John's River.

Among the teams competing at the event were UCF, Nova Southeastern, Florida State, Tampa, Savannah College of Arts and Design and Florida.

The Men's Varsity 8 "A" consisting of coxswain Kristen Sukolsky, Kyle Fitzgerald, Lee Richard, Greg Boccieri, Chris Carter, Patrick Lura, Richmond Jones, Adam Heine and Patrick Smith placed first with a time of 8:39 in a shortened course due to choppy water. The squad finished ahead of the Men's Varsity 8 "B" boat (Men's Lightweight 8) made up of coxswain Jessica Marchant, Matthew Damico, Stefan Negaard, Tyler Humphrey, Joseph Civello, Michael Scully, Matthew Given, Matt Maffesanti and Charlie Allen with a time of 8:41. Florida took third with a mark of 9:10.

The Men's Varsity 4 "A" with coxswain Zachary Crane, Dan Schall, Sebastian Kuhn, Brad Woodrum and Michael Samaha took second with a time of 19:28. Florida took the gold medal with a mark of 18:59.

The Women's Varsity 8 with coxswain Audrey Sefton, Kate Burke, Lyndsay Blair, Kelly Burke, Rachael Pacheco, Adelina Anderson, Aryl Hoats, Alaina Kemp and Keely Wells finished third with a time of 20:14 behind Nova Southeastern (19:36) and SCAD (20:06).

The Women's Varsity 4 "A" consisting of coxswain Audrey Sefton, Kate Burke, Lyndsay Blair, Kelly Burke and Aryl Hoats also took third with a mark of 11:39 behind Nova Southeastern "A" (10:59) and Nova Southeastern "B" (8:41).

Also finishing in the top five during the day's event was the Men's Novice 8 (4th) with a time of 11:18.

JU will next compete in the Head of the Schuylkill on Oct. 28 in Philadelphia.
