Rowing earns four medals at The Head of the Chattahoochee

CHATANOOGA, Tenn. -
The JU rowing teams took to the water for the first time in two weeks as the Men's Lightweight 8, the Men's Lightweight 4, the Men's Championship 4 "A" (Men's Varsity 4) and the Men's Club 8 (Junior Varsity 8) captured each earned a medal at The Head of the Chattahoochee, Saturday on the Chattahoochee River.
"We are really just getting the fall season started so we are trying to find the right matches in the boats," said JU head coach Jim Mitchell. "This is just preparation for the spring but we had a good showing for this race."
The Men's Lightweight 8 consisting of coxswain Jessica Marchant, Matthew Damico, Stefan Negaard, Tyler Humphrey, Joseph Civello, Michael Scully, Matthew Given, Matt Maffessanti, and Charlie Allen finished first with a time of 14:39.5 The squad finished ahead of Georgia Tech (14:45.3) and Clemson.
The Men's Lightweight 4 with coxswain Jessica Marchant, Matthew Damico, Charlie Allen, Michael Scully and Stefan Negaard finished second with a time of 16:11.1 behind Florida Tech (16:10.1). Virginia Tech rounded out the top three with a mark of 16:11.7.
The Men's Championship 4 "A" (Men's Varsity 4) consisting of coxswain Kristen Sukolsky, Patrick Smith, Kyle Fitzgerald, Lee Richard and Patrick Lura finished with a time of 16:03 behind Grand Valley (Mich.) State (15:43) and Florida Tech (15:45).
The Men's Club 8 (Junior Varsity 8) made up of coxswain Ray Davis, Daniel Schall, Michael Samaha, Chris Carter, Bradley Woodrum, Kameron French, Adam Heine, Steve Hood and David Howard placed third with a mark of 15:14 behind North Caroline (14:51) and Florida (15:13).
Also finishing in the top 10 during the day's event was the Men's Championship 8 (Men's Varsity 8) (sixth), the Men's Novice 4 (ninth) and the Women's Lightweight 4 (ninth).
JU will next compete in the Head of the South on Nov. 11 in Augusta, Ga.
