JU Men's Lightweight 8 highlights nine medal effort at The Head of the South

AUGUSTA, Ga. -
The JU rowing teams ended the fall season on a high note as the Men's Lightweight 8 and the Men's Lightweight 4 each earned a gold medal to lead a nine medal effort at The Head of the South, Saturday on the Savannah River.
Among the schools competing in the event were Georgia Tech, Virginia Tech, Alabama, Georgia, Duke and Clemson.
"We are pleased with the improvements that we showed on the water after a week," said JU head coach Jim Mitchell. "We have a lot of work to do to get ready for the spring as we head into winter training."
The Men's Lightweight 8 consisting of coxswain Jessica Marchant, Matthew Damico, Stefan Negaard, Tyler Humphrey, Joseph Civello, Michael Scully, David Howard, Matt Maffessanti, and Charlie Allen finished first with a time of 18:55.2. The squad finished ahead of Georgia Tech (18:57.4) and Clemson (19:39.5).
The Men's Lightweight 4 with coxswain T.J. Urbanek, Matthew Damico, Stefan Negaard, Tyler Humphrey and Charlie Allen finished first with a time of 20:15.4. Clemson (20:29.2) and Virginia Tech (20:31.0) rounded out the top three spots in the race.
Among the JU boats to finish second at the event with a silver medal were the Men's Championship 8, the Men's Club 8, the Men's Championship 4, the Men's Club 4, the Women's Championship 4 "A" and the Women's Freshman 4.
The Women's Championship 8 rounded out top three Dolphin finishers with a bronze medal in their respective race.
JU will next compete in the Rollins Invitational on March 17 in Winter Park, Fla.
