Rowing takes home nine medals at the Petrakis Cup

ORLANDO, Fla. - The JU rowing teams tallied nine medals, including five gold medals, and the Men's Point Trophy as the JU rowing teams competed at the Petrakis Cup on Saturday in Orlando.
The Dolphin men took home the point's trophy after earning gold in the Varsity 8, the Second Varsity 8, the Novice 8, the Varsity 4 and the Lightweight 8 against UCF, Tulane, Miami and Embry Riddle. The men also garnered a silver medal in the Novice 4.
The Dolphin women earned silver in the Varsity 4 and bronze in the Second Varsity 8 and the Lightweight 4.
"I was impressed by all of our Men's 8's and our Women's Varsity 4," said JU head coach Jim Mitchell. "They all raced well after a tough week of spring break training. We expect all of our boats to get much faster after recovering from the work they did this week."
The Men's Varsity 8 consisting of coxswain Kristen Sukolsky, Patrick Smith, Kyle Fitzgerald, Michael Scully, Patrick Lura, Richmond Jones, Adam Heine, Lee Richard and Greg Boccieri finished first with a time of 6:06.64, ahead of Tulane (6:16.43) and UCF (6:23.53).
The Second Men's Varsity 8 with coxswain Ray Davis, Matt Maffesanti, Stefan Negaard, Tyler Humphrey, Joseph Civello, Chris Carter, Matthew Given, Rick McCarson and Charlie Allen placed first with a mark of 6:22.19, ahead of UCF (6:55.82).
The Men's Novice 8 consisting of coxswain T.J. Urbanek, Matthew D'Amico, Michael Samaha, Kameron French, Sebastian Kuhn, Garrett Markle, Lucas Meers, Erich Negaard and Romeo Cabanban took first with a time of 6:17.70, ahead of Tulane (6:50.04), UCF "A" (7:01.09) and UCF "B" (8:29.00).
The Men's Varsity 4 with coxswain Kristen Sukolsky, Patrick Smith, Kyle Fitzgerald, Chris Carter and Patrick Lura placed first with a mark of 6:56.68, ahead of Tulane (7:01.48), UCF "A" (7:26.2), Embry Riddle "B" (7:30.71), UCF "B" (7:45.28) and Embry Riddle "A" (7:53.01).
The Men's Lightweight 8 with coxswain Jessica Marchant, Matthew D'Amico, Stefan Negaard, Tyler Humphrey, Joseph Civello, Matt Maffesanti, Matthew Given, Ryan McCarson and Charlie Allen placed first with a time of 6:13.14, ahead of UCF (6:30.75).
The Women's Varsity 8 (fourth) and the Women's Novice 4 (fourth) also placed for the Dolphins.
The Dolphins will next compete in the FIRA State Championship on April 13-14.
