JU Rowing set for SIRA Championships this weekend

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -
Following a record breaking weekend at the SIRA State Championships last week, the JU rowing teams will take the next step towards completing the spring season as the Dolphins compete in the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships on Friday and Saturday at The Melton Hill Rowing Course on Melton Hill Lake.
Among the other schools competing in the event will be Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, Duke, Florida, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Michigan State, North Carolina, NC State, Purdue, Sacramento State, Stetson, Tennessee, Texas, UCF, UCLA, Virginia Tech, Virginia, Washington and West Virginia.
JU will have a total of six boats competing this weekend including three from the men (Varsity 8, Lightweight 8, Junior Varsity 8) and three from the women (Varsity 8, Varsity 4, Novice 4).
The Men's Lightweight 8 with coxswain Jessica Marchant, Stefan Negaard, Tyler Humphrey, Michael Scully, Joseph Civello, Matt Maffesanti, Matthew Given, Ryan McCarson and Charlie Allen will compete in their qualifying heat at 5:20 p.m. on Friday against Clemson, Mercyhurst, Purdue and Washington. The top three finishers will advance to the A Final, while the bottom four boats compete in the B Final.
The Women's Novice 4 with coxswain Loren Caison, Jenna Barker, Claire Pirri, Tori Bigley and Tiffanie Parchment compete in their qualifying heat at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday against Ohio, Stetson, Tulane and West Wilson. The top three boats advance to the A/B Semifinal Heats.
The Women's Varsity 4 consisting of coxswain Michelle Henry, Leira Fuentes, Kate Gout, Keely Wells and Amanda Soukup compete in their first qualifying heat at 10:01 a.m. against Clemson, Georgia, Texas and Stetson. The top three finishers advance to the A/B/C Semifinals and the fourth-place boat advances to the C Semifinals.
The Men's Varsity 8 consisting of coxswain Kristen Sukolsky, Kyle Fitzgerald, Patrick Smith, Greg Boccieri, Lee Richard, Patrick Lura, Richmond Jones, Adam Heine and Matthew D'Amico and will compete in their first qualifying heat at 11:30 a.m. against Cincinnati, Florida, Georgia Tech and Virginia. The top three finishers will advance to the A/B semifinal heats.
The Men's Junior Varsity 8 with coxswain TJ Urbanek, Michael Samaha, Kameron French, Daniel Schall, Chris Carter, Sebastion Kuhn, Garrett Markle, Lucas Meers and Erich Negaard will go at 4:30 p.m. against Virginia, Purdue and Temple. The top three finishers will advance to the A Final.
The Women's Varsity 8 with coxswain Audrey Sefton, Stephanie Bechtold, Lyndsay Blair, Kate Burke, Rachael Pacheco, Jessica Tuten, Adelina Anderson, Kelly Burke and Robin Corbo compete in their Semifinal Heat at 6:11 p.m. against Alabama, Kansas State, Purdue, Sacramento State and West Virginia. The top three finishers advance to the A Final, while the bottom four square off in the B Final.
Last year, the Dolphins finished with three medals which included silver and two bronze.
