JU Rowing completes first day at Dad Vail Regatta

JU rowing will live to see another day as all four boats advanced to the next stage of their respective heats at the prestigious Dad Vail Regetta, Friday on the Schulykill River in Philadelphia, Pa.

The 69th annual regatta, featured more than 100 colleges and 3,300 rowers from the United States and Canada. Schools qualify in the initial races will move on to Semi-Final heats on Saturday, with the event finals being held late Saturday.

The Men's Varsity 8 with coxswain Kristen Sukolsky, Kyle Fitzgerald, Patrick Smith, Greg Boccieri, Lee Richard, Patrick Lura, Richmond Jones, Adam Heine and Mattew D'Amico advanced after finishing second in its qualifying heat with a time of 6:07.35. Army placed first with a time of 6:03.93 while Loyola (6:15.56), LaSalle (6:22.9) and Santa Clara (6:32.48) rounded out the rest of the field. The Dolphins will now compete in the Semi-Finals on Saturday at 10:40 a.m. against George Mason, Grand Valley, Ohio State, Rochester Inst Tech and Temple.

The Men's Junior Varsity 8 consisting of coxswain TJ Urbanek, Michael Samaha, Kameron French, Daniel Schall, Chris Carter, Sebastian Kuhn, Garrett Markle, Lucas Meers and Erich Negaard advanced after placing second with a mark of 6:19.85. LeHigh won the heat with a time of 6:14.98 while St. Joseph's (6:20.53) and Marietta (6:31.97) rounded out the rest of the field. The Dolphins will compete in Saturday's Final at 2:20 p.m. against Army, LeHigh, Purdue, Rochester Inst Tech and Temple for the Ernie Bayer Trophy.

The Men's Lightweight 8 with coxswain Jessica Marchant, Stefan Negaard, Tyler Humphrey, Michael Scully, Joseph Civello, Matt Maffessanti, Matthew Given, Rick McCarson and Charlie Allen advanced after finishing second with a time of 6:19.05. Georgia Tech won the heat with a time of 6:09.31 while Purdue (6:24.11) and LeHigh (6:33.45) rounded out the rest of the field. The Dolphins will move on to Saturday's Final at 3:20 p.m. against Georgia Tech, Grand Valley, Mercyhurst, Northwestern and St. Joseph's for the Thomas W. Loschiavo Trophy.

The Women's Varsity 4 with coxswain Audrey Sefton, Kate Burke, Lyndsay Blair, Stephanie Bechtold and Adelina Anderson won its heat with a time of 7:42.28, ahead of New York (7:48.39), Georgia (7:48.76), Sacred Heart (8:12.8), Catholic (8:20.41) and Albany (8:23.86). The Dolphins will compete in the Semi-Finals on Saturday at 9:50 against Charleston, Duquesne, Lafayette, NW St. LA and Rutgers Camden.
