Dolphins return home for final time in 2007

Nov. 26, 2007

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - With more than a month left on the calendar for 2007, it's hard to believe that the JU men's basketball team is playing its final home game of the year on Wednesday.

As hard as it is to believe, the Dolphins wrap up their home slate for 2007 on Wednesday against Georgia State at the Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Arena, with tipoff set for 7:30 p.m.

JU (3-1) hits the road after Wednesday game for a six-game road trip, including three matchups against NCAA Tournament teams from a year ago with two of those making it to the Final Four.

The Dolphins are looking to bounce back after UAB rained 3-pointers in handing JU its first loss of the season on Saturday, 84-72.

"We made a lot of mistakes, especially in taking care of the basketball, that you just can't do," said JU head coach Cliff Warren. "Our focus right now is on us getting better as a team."

Freshman Szymon Lukasiak had the best game of his young career, racking up 12 points and seven rebounds. The 6-foot-10 center was 6-of-11 shooting and was solid on defense, getting six of his rebounds on the defensive end.

The Dolphins continued their struggles from 3-point land, going just 3-of-12. On the season, JU has hit just 18 3-pointers and has only hit 24.7 percent of its shots from beyond the arc.

While JU hasn't been lighting it up from long range, the Dolphins are rock solid at the free throw line. JU has hit 97 free throws in its four games, averaging 24.3 per game, while knocking down 78.9 percent from the stripe.

Ben Smith has made a living at the line this season, hitting 37-of-40 (92.5 percent) free throw attempts. The sophomore point guard leads the Dolphins in scoring (18.0 ppg), assists (6.0 apg) and steals (2.5 spg).

Wednesday's game will be broadcast on 1010XL with Barry Milligan calling the play-by-play. The game will also be televised on JUDolphins.com through ASun.TV.
