Track and Field has banner day at LSU Alumni Gold

BATON ROUGE, La. - The JU track and field team broke two school records, had three regional qualifying marks and posted six seasonal bests to complete a successful day at the LSU Alumni Gold on Saturday afternoon in Baton Rouge, La.

"We had a great day," said JU head coach Ron Grigg. "Our girls came in focused and they exceeded all expectations. We will look for continued improvement next weekend in our final meet before the conference championships."

Sophomore Janel Grooms broke the school record in the 400-meter hurdles with a regional qualifying mark of 58.86 to finish second. Her mark is also the 15th fastest time in the NCAA heading into the weekend.

Sophomore Shaquania Lundy also broke a school record at the meet by setting the new mark in the triple jump with a tally of 39'07" (12.96m) to place eighth.

In the long jump, sophomore Natasha Harvey qualified for regionals for the second straight season with a jump of 20'06.5" (6.26m) to place fourth. Senior Janita Ocana finished seventh in the long jump after tallying her third consecutive long jumping regional qualifying mark with 20'01" (6.12m).

Ocana also posted season bests in the 100-meter dash (12.00) and 200-meter dashes (24.58). Harvey ran a 13.96 to finish in ninth in the 100-meter hurdles and placed seventh in the 400-meter hurdles (1:02.75) to wrap up her day.

Freshmen Alyssa Deal, Alison Ritter, Ashley Zilles and Hillary Crook each posted season bests for the Dolphins. Deal ran a time of 4:39.88 in the 1500-meter run to place third, while Ritter took sixth in the same event with 4:43.30.

In the hammer throw, Zilles recorded a mark of 114-0 and Crook made a throw of 109-07 to finish the event. Crook would also finish seventh in the shot put with 41-08.5

Simone Clark finished eighth in the 400-meter hurdles (1:04.30) and 11th in the 100-meter hurdles (14.44) to round out JU's afternoon.

The Dolphins are back in action on Saturday, April 28 when they travel down to Orlando, Fla. for the UCF Golden Knight Twilight.
