North Carolina Ends Dolphin Winning Streak At Five

October 16, 1999

Jacksonville, Fla. - The 26th ranked University of North Carolina (17-3) ended Jacksonville University's five-match winning streak with a 3-0 (15-10, 15-6, 16-14) victory over the Dolphins at Swisher Gymnasium on Saturday night. With the victory, the Tar Heels improved their own winning streak to 14, while JU dropped to 10-8 on the season.

Carolina used a strong team defense at the net to hold Jacksonville to a .084 team hitting average for the match. The Heels' dominating defense, combined with the offensive play of senior Shannon Smith, was more than enough for the Tar Heels to post their eighth three game sweep of the season. Smith led the Tar Heels with 17 kills and a .583 hitting average, while posting five solo blocks and three block assists. Classmate Tori Seibert joined Smith in double-digit kills with 10 for UNC. Freshman Eve Rackham directed the Carolina offense with 36 assists, and sophomore Melissa Higgins chipped in with a team-high 10 digs.

The Tar Heels held Jacksonville's high-powered duo of senior Kelly Hickam and sophomore Carrie Arago to a combined 16 kills and a -.057 hitting average. Freshman Brooke Ahrens stepped up her play for the Dolphins, posting eight kills and a .333 hitting average, but it was not enough to overcome a taller and more physical UNC team. Sophomore Carrie Bosworth once again led the Dolphins with 23 assists, while adding seven kills, nine digs and three total blocks for Jacksonville.

The Dolphins will return to action on Tuesday, October 19th at 7:00 P.M. when they host their second straight ACC opponent, Florida State, in Swisher Gymnasium. The Tar Heels will return home for a ACC match with Clemson on October 22nd.
