Jacksonville, Fla. - Jacksonville University dropped their volleyball season opener with nationally ranked Florida (2-1) by the score of 3-0 (15-3, 15-9,15-9) at Swisher Gymnasium here Wednesday night. The high powered Gators offense proved to be the deciding factor in the match as Florida posted an impressive .466 team hitting percentage.
After dropping games one and two to the Gators, Jacksonville put things together in game three and had the Gators reeling before a time-out by Florida Head Coach Mary Wise. With the Dolphins holding a 9-8 lead, the Gators settled down from there, scoring the game's final seven points to claim the 15-9 victory and the straight-game sweep. Leading the way for the Dolphins were sophomore Carrie Arago and senior Kelly Hickam with 10 kills each. Sophomore Carrie Bosworth fueled the Jacksonville attack with a match-high 35 assists in her first start for the Dolphins.
Senior All-America Jenny Manz led the Gators with 19 kills and a .571 hitting percentage. Fellow senior Jenny Whitehead and junior Heather Wright joined Manz in double-digit kills with 12 and 11 respectively, while senior setter Jennifer Sanchez notched 31 assists.
Jacksonville will return to action on Thursday night when they host Western Michigan at 7:00 P.M. in Swisher Gymnasium. The Gators return to Gainesville after opening the season with three straight on the road as they host the Suntrust Invitational September 4th and 5th.
