Dolphins Fall To Paladins In Final Match Of JU Invitational

September 12, 1999

Jacksonville, Fla. - Despite recording a school record-tying 19 aces, Jacksonville (3-4) dropped a tough five-game match to Furman (3-4) by the score of 3-2 (15-10, 5-15, 16-14, 10-15, 15-10) on Sunday afternoon in the final match of the 1999 JU Volleyball Invitational at Swisher Gymnasium. Jacksonville finished tournament play at 2-2 (defeating Coastal Carolina and Georgia Southern on Saturday and falling to Florida Atlantic on Friday), while the Paladins posted a 2-1 mark (defeating Coastal Carolina and falling to Florida Atlantic on Saturday) in their three tournament matches.

In Sunday afternoon's match, Jacksonville twice rallied from one game down behind the strong play of sophomores Carrie Bosworth (45 assists, five aces and nine kills) and Carrie Arago (20 kills, four aces and seven digs), and senior Kelly Hickam (17 kills and 12 digs). However, the Paladins proved to be too strong as they built a commanding lead in game five and held on for the 15-10 victory.

Furman was led by junior Brooke Jackson's (Coral Springs, Fla.) 19 kills and sophomore Laura Hooks' 47 assists, seven kills and four aces. The Paladins' freshman Carrie Rowley (13), and sophomores Amber Vanderstreek (12) and Anna Roberts (10), also posted double-digit kills for Furman.

Jacksonville's Arago and Hickam, and Furman's Jackson were joined on the All-Tournament team by Florida Atlantic's Heather Chandler and Dawn Elston, and Coastal Carolina's Katie Knutson. Hickam was named as the tournament MVP.

Jacksonville will return to action on Friday, September 17th at 6:00 P.M. when they host Florida A&M in Swisher Gymnasium.
