Arago Named TAAC Player Of The Year

Macon, Ga. - For the second straight season, Jacksonville University has the top player in the Trans America Athletic Conference as sophomore Carrie Arago (Longwood, Fla.) was selected the 1999 TAAC Volleyball Player-of-the-Year, as voted by the TAAC head volleyball coaches and sports information directors.

An All-Newcomer selection in 1998, Arago edged out Florida Atlantic's Lori Lombard to keep the honor in Jacksonville, ex-Dolphin Tara Burton was the player-of-the-year in 1998. Arago, also selected to the TAAC All-Conference First Team, is currently ranked third nationally in service aces and leads the TAAC in kills per game (4.16) and aces per game (0.67), and she is eighth in the TAAC in digs per game (2.85). Lombard is second in the TAAC in kills per game (3.93)

Joining Arago and Lombard on the 1999 TAAC All-Conference First Team are Georgia State's Amber Davis (Sr. MB), UCF teammates Piper Morgan (So., MB), Becca Saldana (Fr., S) and Susan Rosenberger (Sr., OH).

Davis, third in the TAAC in kills per game (3.65), was named the TAAC Player-of-the-Week three times this season. Morgan leads the TAAC in blocks, averaging 1.28 per game, while teammate Becca Saldana, who was also named to the TAAC All-Newcomer team, is the TAAC leader in assists (12.91).

All six first teamers are first time TAAC All-Conference honorees. For UCF, this marks the fourth time they have placed three players on the first team (1987, 1995, 1997, 1999). In 1986, they had three players on the second team.

Jacksonville senior Kelly Hickam (Collinsville, Ill.) was a selected to the TAAC's All-Conference Second Team. Hickam is currently second on the Dolphins and eighth in the TAAC in kills per game (3.30), and leads the team and is second in the TAAC in digs pers game (3.51).

UCF's Meg Fitzgerald, in her first season with the Golden Knights, is the 1999 TAAC Volleyball Coach-of-the-Year. She guided UCF to a league leading 9-0 conference finish and a top seed in the TAAC Championship. The Goldens Knights are 11-0 against TAAC opponents this season.
