Dolphins Fall To Broncos In Three

September 2, 1999

Jacksonville, Fla. - Jacksonville University (0-2) dropped their second straight home volleyball match to open the 1999 season on Thursday night, falling 3-0 (15-2, 15-4, 15-7) to Western Michigan (1-0) at Swisher Gymnasium.

Junior Juanita Barb and sophomore Carrie Bosworth were the only bright spots for the Dolphins on a night that saw Jacksonville post a .085 team hitting percentage. Barb led the Dolphins with seven kills and a .455 hitting percentage while Bosworth collected six kills and notched a team-high 15 assists.

Western Michigan, which hit an impressive .361 as a team, had no players reach double figures in kills as setter Jen Nowak kept the Dolphins guessing by distributing the ball to nine different Broncos for kills on her way to a match-high 29 assists. Mandy Whitfield paced Western with eight kills while M'Myia McQuirter and Traci Morin chipped in with seven apiece. Just as impressive as their offense was the Bronco defense as Western out-dug and out-blocked the Dolphins 44-29 and eight to one respectively.

The Dolphins will look to earn their first win of the season on Saturday, September 4th at 5:00 when they host South Carolina State at Swisher Gymnasium. Meanwhile, the Broncos will look to continue their strong play on Saturday as well when they face Nebraska and Florida in a tournament in Gainesville.
